Villa Romana de Río Verde

Roman villa·Río Verde

Roman mosaics by the sea

About Villa Romana de Río Verde

A 2nd-century Roman villa by the sea, between the Golden Mile and Puerto Banús, with some of the most original mosaics in Spain. A short, rewarding stop that most visitors drive past.

A rich family by the sea

The villa of Río Verde stood at the mouth of the river of the same name. What survives is the pars urbana, the residential part of a wealthy coastal estate, whose working side would have been devoted to fishing and salting fish, a lucrative trade along the coast of Roman Baetica. Archaeologists believe a fish-sauce factory lay nearby, where purple dye, another prized export, may also have been made.

The remains were discovered and partly excavated in the early 1960s. They are one of the few examples on the Andalusian coast of the living quarters of such an estate, which makes them precious for understanding how a well-off family lived in the 2nd century AD.

The south corridor shows the kitchen of a Roman house in black and white: pots, pans, food and utensils laid out like a frieze.

The mosaics

The excavated area is a porticoed courtyard with covered corridors on three sides, whose roof rested on twelve columns; only their bases remain. The corridors and several rooms are paved with mosaics of rare quality and originality.

The most famous runs along the south corridor: a two-colour frieze of food and kitchen utensils that shows the pots, pans and favourite foods of the time. On the west side, a symmetrical composition of anchors, dolphins and rudders carried a protective meaning. The most striking image is in a room off the north corridor: a polychrome head of Medusa surrounded by water birds and wine vessels, drawn with extraordinary skill.

Visiting

The site is small and can be seen in half an hour. The town’s cultural office lists it with free entry and asks groups to contact it in advance. Opening times vary, so check before you go.

Our advice: combine it with a swim at Río Verde beach and lunch in Puerto Banús, and look closely at the kitchen mosaic: it is a Roman shopping list in stone.
