About Hospital Real de la Misericordia
The Hospital Real de la Misericordia was founded by the Catholic Monarchs as a royal hospital for travellers and was run by the Brothers of St John of God. Its two floors are arranged around a central patio with arcades, and the adjoining chapel of San Juan de Dios, known locally as the “Hospitalillo”, has a carved wooden ceiling that stayed hidden until the mid-20th century. It is now a cultural centre in the heart of the Old Town.
